Winter weather is being identified as a major factor in an ongoing shortage of life-saving blood products. The American Red Cross says that some 15,000 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected in just the first three weeks of the year. Bitter weather hasn’t only discouraged donors from making appointments, but it’s also made it harder for the Red Cross to move those blood products through their network, affecting deliveries to hospitals in some locations.
While the worst weather has eased up the blood shortage has not, and donors are being urged to make a donation appointment now by going online to RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Those who donate during February will be offered a $20 Amazon.com gift card in hopes that the incentive will boost the number of donors, which has reached a 20-year low.
