A semi traveling through Elkhart Lake on Wednesday failed to stop for a controlled intersection, but it was stopped – eventually – by the building it crashed into.
Sheboygan County Emergency Dispatch says that a private citizen contacted the Elkhart Lake Police Department at around 10:50 a.m. to report an accident at the intersection of Rhine and Lincoln Streets involving a semi.
Investigators say the semi failed to stop at the intersection of roads also known as Highway 67 and County Highway “J”, which is a 4-way stop. The semi collided with a vehicle and then continued into a nearby building where it became lodged.
The semi driver, who was cited for failure to obey the stop sign, wasn’t injured, however the driver of the other vehicle and two juvenile occupants were transported by a private party to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Besides emergency responders, multiple utilities responded to the scene, and the State of Wisconsin Building Inspector was called in to examine the building for structural integrity.
