A Winter Storm Warning from 6 a.m. Tuesday until 3 a.m. Wednesday is in effect for much of Wisconsin as a significant winter storm moves through the nation’s midsection. In the Sheboygan area, that warning comes with forecasts of heavy, wet snow and driving winds off the lake, and prompting most every school district to cancel Tuesday classes.
Precipitation began as snow early this morning, but enough warmer air meant only slushy accumulations in the early round. Still, temperatures near freezing allowed slippery conditions especially in southern and western parts of the County, sending plows to salt and clear roads well before daybreak.
With a wetter-than-expected start, snowfall totals have been lowered a bit by National Weather Service forecasters who now say that about six inches is expected in the City of Sheboygan, which juts out into Lake Michigan. Most other locations including Plymouth, Cedar Grove, Cleveland, Random Lake and Elkhart Lake are forecast to receive 8 or 9 inches before the snow abates overnight. What won’t ease up, though, are winds of 20-25 mph gusting over 35 at times, driving the snow and possibly reducing visibility.
Sheboygan County law enforcement in both the Cities and rural areas are urging caution, putting off driving for now if you can. And if you must hit the road, have an emergency kit handy and remember to stay at least 200 feet behind snow plows.
