The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of those who died in a spate of Christmas week crashes on I-43.
The Sheboygan man whose southbound vehicle left I-43 at Manitowoc County Highway “XX” on December 26th, colliding with a guardrail and eventually striking a tree, was identified as 19-year-old Michael Murphy. No other details of that accident were released.
On December 28th, the driver and sole occupant of a northbound S-10 pickup truck, identified as 56-year-old John Schneider of Green Bay, left I-43, entering the median where it struck a guardrail, proceeding down a steep embankment and coming to rest along the south side of the Manitowoc River.
In the most serious of the set of three accidents, charges have now been issued against the driver of a northbound Suburban that struck another northbound vehicle on I-43 at Fischer Creek Road on Christmas Day, sending both vehicles out of control. The Chevrolet Tahoe that was struck entered the median, struck the end of a guardrail and came to a stop in the southbound lanes of I-43. The operator of the Tahoe, now identified as 60-year-old Mark Vinton of Manitowoc, and his 66-year-old female passenger of Two Rivers, were both transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Both the front and rear seat passengers in the Suburban that struck Vinton succumbed to their injuries. They were 71-year-old Clarine Slezewski and 38-year-old Heather Arcaro-Slezewski, both of Green Bay. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Philip Slezewski of Green Bay, was arrested and charged with two counts of Causing Death by knowingly operating while suspended; two counts of Causing Great Bodily Harm by knowingly operating while suspended; Possession of THC; Violation of Child Safety Restraint; and Operating a motor vehicle without insurance. No court appearances for Slezewski were included in the Wednesday afternoon release.
