Christmastime has taken a tragic turn in east-central Wisconsin, as three lives were lost in traffic accidents on I-43 in Manitowoc County on Christmas and the following day.
At 2:45 p.m. on Monday the 25th, Manitowoc County Emergency Dispatch sent responders to a two-vehicle accident on I-43 at Fischer Creek Road in the Township of Centerville. Sheriff Dan Hartwig said the crash resulted when two northbound vehicles made contact causing both to lose control. A Chevy Tahoe operated by a 60-year-old Manitowoc man was struck by a Chevy Suburban being operated by a 38-year-old Green Bay man.
The operator of the Tahoe and his 66-year-old female passenger of Two Rivers were both transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Their vehicle had entered the median, struck the end of a guardrail and came to rest in the southbound lanes of I-43.
The 38-year-old driver of the Suburban and a juvenile passenger were transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers in that vehicle, a 38-year-old female and 71-year-old female, both of Green Bay, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Both directions of I-43 were diverted between Newton and Cleveland for more than six hours while investigators cleared the scene.
Then on Tuesday morning the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash that resulted from a southbound passenger car leaving the passing lane, striking a guardrail, entering the west ditch and eventually colliding with a tree. The 19-year-old man from Sheboygan operating that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both crashes remain under investigation, and no more information was to be released as of noon on Tuesday.
