Area fire departments, first responders and Sheriff’s officers had their hands full, and one person now has a boatload of charges to answer for after a complex scene unfolded on Tuesday afternoon.
Sheriff’s Sergeant Brad Robinson detailed what began as a 911 call little before 4:30 p.m. concerning a disturbance on Sunset Avenue in a mobile home park just north of Sheboygan Falls.
The caller said that their female neighbor was being attacked by a man known to the victim. The man, who had a protective order against him, not only physically attacked her, but was destroying property, threatening to burn down the home, and was engaging in self-harm. The victim had fled and was later located nearby with non-life threatening injuries and was turned over to the Red Cross for assistance.
Multiple fire departments stood by while the first of several Sheriff’s deputies entered the home, which by that time was doused in gasoline. The man then lit a fire that eventually spread to the gasoline. After that first Deputy was unable to subdue the man a second one arrived, attempting to remove the still-struggling man from the home. However officers exited without the man as smoke overcame them.
Additional Deputies used numerous extinguishers to dampen the fire while the man was then removed from a bedroom. Firefighters then extinguished the blaze, but not before it did substantial damage.
Two Deputies were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and the man was treated and released into custody. He now faces multiple charges that will be filed by the District Attorney’s Office.
Potential charges include Disorderly Conduct (Domestic Violence), Battery (Domestic Violence) Intimidation of a Victim, Criminal Damage to Property, 2nd Degree Reckless Endangering of Safety, and Arson.
