A scam that claims to lower utility bills is draining money from Calumet County residents, and is likely to be affecting surrounding areas as well.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office says people there have already lost money to the scammers, and the fact that many of the thieves are operating outside the US is making recovery of that money difficult if not impossible.
Wisconsin Public Service has also warned its customers about receiving a call from operators impersonating a representative of the utility who will offer a reduction of up to 30% off bills. Those calls can appear to be official on caller ID, and may use recordings that sound legitimate. The caller may also threaten disconnection or demand immediate payment. In the process, the scammers obtain not only personal information that can compromise bank accounts, but also get money via gift cards, crypto currency and cash. Calumet County officials add that other operators are using scams demanding bond to avoid arrest or get a loved one out of jail.
The Sheriff’s Office is advising people to contact agencies directly from numbers supplied on your utility bill, or to get ahold of them for more information at 920-849-2335. You may also contact Wisconsin Public Service by phone at 800-450-7260, or visit their website for more information.
