(Reuters) – Hurricane Tammy strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane over open waters, but is expected to weaken to an extratropical cyclone by Thursday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday.
The hurricane was located about 540 miles (870 km) south-southeast of Bermuda, packing maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 km/h), the NHC said.
Some additional strengthening is possible on Wednesday, after which it is likely to weaken through late this week, the Miami-based forecaster said.
