Gail Meerdink, 89, of Cedar Grove passed away on the morning of October 20, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Gail was born to Jerry and Amelia Mulder on August 19, 1934, in Waterford, Wisconsin, and spent her early years in Port Washington before moving to Oostburg. There she attended Oostburg High School, where she was active in the school’s drama club and cultivated an early interest in sports, which became a lifelong passion.
On May 23, 1956, Gail married Glenn Meerdink of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. Gail and Glenn were married for 66 years until his death in May 2022. Together they raised three children.
Gail enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially at the family cabin in Florence County, Wisconsin. At the cabin, she loved fishing and berry picking, and most evenings included a game of cards, typically cribbage. At the cabin or at home, you could almost always find her at work on a puzzle. She also loved making cards and scrapbooking with her sister, and she was always ready to provide family and friends with their favorite meals with ice cream for dessert.
Along with Glenn, Gail was a charter member of Faith Reformed Church in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, and faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a long-term supporter of the Words of Hope radio ministry, sharing her husband’s desire for the continuing spread of the gospel of redemption through the blood of Jesus Christ. Just days before her death, she was visited by members of the Words of Hope team in Uganda, who thanked “Mama Gail” for her support and work on behalf of the gospel in their country.
Gail is survived by her children Lynn (Kevin) Robinson, Jill (Tom) Vander Zouwen, and Jan (Rhonda) Meerdink, her sister Vonnie DuMez, eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law Harry and Gladys Meerdink, brother Phillip Mulder, sisters-in-law Claudia Mulder, Phyllis Joosse, and Carolyn Heinen, and brothers-in-law John Joosse, Warren Heinen, and Duane DuMez.
A funeral to celebrate Gail’s life will be held on Saturday, October 28 at 11 a.m. at Faith Reformed Church in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. Burial will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family at Faith Reformed Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
