The Wisconsin Department of Justice has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Fond du Lac. The events began just before 6 a.m. Saturday when officers responding to a disturbance involving weapons in the City of Fond du Lac located a vehicle of interest with a man inside. Gunfire was exchanged with the subject who was injured and died at the scene, however the exact cause of death was not determined. The Deputy involved was put on administrative leave, and was equipped with body-worn and squad cameras which will be reviewed by DOJ and Wisconsin Crime Lab specialists during the investigation.
Meanwhile, Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K-9 Deputy Iro required a lengthy surgery to address a gunshot wound sustained during the incident. A pre-surgery transfusion was needed – and supplied – by a yellow lab named Dwyer, owned by a hospital veterinary technician, that was a match for Iro’s blood type, and both are now doing well. Those who’d like to donate to cover the cost of Iro’s medical bills can do so directly at the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office lobby window or by phone at 920-929-3372.
(Editor’s note: The original story implied that a deputy was responsible for the fatal shot. While a deputy was placed on administrative leave, that does not imply this, and the story has been edited to show that the exact cause of death remains under investigation.)
