A chimney sweep has been working atop a downtown Sheboygan smokestack since 1992, but his recent absence and possible return will the subject of a meeting of the Historical Preservation Committee this afternoon.
The statue, known as “Billy Bud”, was removed recently and, according to the owners of the former Jung Shoe Company building – which is listed in the State and National Historic Registries – won’t have his old perch back as the smokestack he stood upon is planned to be taken down from its current 90-foot height to just 20-feet, level with the top of the building as seen from the street. But the City of Sheboygan, which believes it has a say on the matter, isn’t signing off on that plan yet. The owners of the Henry Jung Apartments say that it’s their decision to make and have been in discussions with the City.
A meeting this afternoon of the Sheboygan Historical Preservation Committee will discuss their ability to regulate what happens. For now, Billy Bud – and his fans – await his fate.
