A national shortage of blood has the American Red Cross sounding the call for donors. The shortage is the result of fewer donors during the summer that has reduced distributions of some of the most needed blood types to hospitals. In addition, Hurricane Idalia further strained supplies as collections were cancelled in the affected areas. The hurricane compounded a shortfall of about 30,000 donations in August, and that has a call for donors going out nationwide. And while all types are needed, type-O donors are especially valuable.
Appointments to donate can be made online at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling the Red Cross toll-free at 1-800-RedCross (1-800-733-2767). Those donating now through September 18th will receive a limited-edition Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last, and through the remainder of September, donors will get a coupon for a free haircut by email, thanks to Sport Clips Haircuts, and entered into a drawing for a VIP NASCAR racing experience.
