Early Sunday morning on August 27th, a “cybersecurity incident” forced Prevea and Hospital Sisters Health Systems in Wisconsin and Illinois to shut down their computer operating and communications system, and recovery is still ongoing.
In a September 1st video address, Damond Boatwright, HSHS President and CEO, explained that a pre-planned protocol was followed to take those systems offline while still providing care, and the process of discovering the full scope and impact is still ongoing.
Boatwright said that law enforcement and third-party professionals are investigating whether or not any personal information may have been leaked, but there have already been reports of suspicious emails, texts and phone calls sent to patients, mostly concerning billing, and those who’ve received them are being asked to save them for the investigation.
While phone systems were entirely down earlier in the process, much has since been restored. Anyone with questions or evidence is should email those to questions@hshs.org.
