Phone calls telling people to pay up for missing jury duty are being sent in surrounding counties, and so are the warnings that it’s all a scam.
Brown, Calumet and Fond du Lac Counties are among those reporting the calls that tell the intended victim that they failed to report for jury duty, and now must either mail a penalty using cash or a gift card, or else turn themselves in for arrest. In Calumet County the caller identified themselves as a Sergeant Wilson, but of course there is no such Sheriff’s officer there, and the Fond du Lac and Brown County Sheriffs say victims in their counties were told to go to their respective offices.
The Sheriffs point out that the only legitimate notice of jury duty is via a summons in the mail, accompanied by a juror handbook with instructions listing the only proper contacts. They say if you receive a scam call, hang up, and if you’ve been impacted, then call your local police department.
