The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning in effect for Sheboygan County, as well as Fond du Lac and Ozaukee Counties today from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. The warning is for a combination of hot temperatures and high humidities that will drive the heat index as high as 106 degrees. The heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body, and at the levels expected this kind of weather can be life-threatening. The worst conditions will be between noon and 6 p.m., but with temperatures not expected to fall much below 70 degrees, the body won’t have much of chance to cool down overnight either.
The National Weather Service is advising people to wear light, loose-fitting clothing and to drink water often, and don’t wait until you’re thirsty. If you don’t have air conditioning you should avoid unnecessary hard work or activities and use a fan or find a public space that is conditioned in order to cool down. If you do feel faint or stressed by the heat, you could be experiencing heat stroke which is an emergency, and you should call 9-1-1 for help.
If there is good news it’s that things should be much better by tomorrow and we don’t expect any more heat emergencies for the remainder of the week.
