(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 18, 2023 – In his fourth decade of racing open-wheeled cars, 31-year veteran Tony Wondra of Campbellsport has shown no signs of slowing down in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car action at The Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wis.
In fact, Wondra showed he still has what it takes to wheel a Sprint Car to victory by notching his third career PDTR 360 Sprint Car A-main triumph at The Plymouth Dirt Track on June 10.
Wondra, who began his racing career in the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Winged Super Modified division in 1993, is enjoying one of the best season of PDTR 360 Sprint Car competition of his long career as he currently sits eighth in the point standings with four events remaining in the 2023 season.
Through the first 13 events of the 2023 PDTR 360 Sprint campaign, Wondra has recorded one top-five and six top-10 A-main showings.
“My goal for the rest of the season is to win as many races as I can and finish in the top five in the point standings,” Wondra season.
As a member of one of the most vibrant racing families in the 73-year history of The Plymouth Dirt Track, Wondra was introduced to the sport of dirt track racing at a young age.
“I was introduced to racing through my father, Rich Wondra, who raced in the Winged Super Modified division back in the 1970s and 1980s,” Wondra said. “I really started to get actively involved in the sport when I began pitting for my uncle, Butch Wondra, who also raced a Winged Super Modified at Plymouth.”
Four years later, he himself followed in the footsteps of his father and uncle in jumping behind the wheel of an EWSC Winged Super Modified and he has continued to compete season in and season out since his 1993 rookie campaign.
“During my racing career, I have only competed in two divisions,” Wondra said. “From 1933 to 2005, I raced in the EWSC Winged Super Modified division. From 2005 to today, I have been a competitor in the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing and Midwest Sprint Car Association 360 Sprint Car division. I actually raced both the Winged Super Modified and 360 Sprint Car during the 2005 season.”
During his 31-years behind the wheel, Wondra has posted his fair share of victories, including two EWSC Winged Super Modified A-main triumphs and a total of eight MSA 360 Sprint Car main event wins, among his 69 total wins in the 360 Sprint Car ranks.
“I have been lucky to win quite a few races over the years, including a total of 10 A mains,” Wondra said. “As far as career highlights go, I feel every A-main win is a highlight.”
Since pulling through the pit gate for his first night of action in 1993 through today, Wondra has thoroughly enjoyed his racing career at Plymouth.
“I like the fact that the Plymouth track is close to come, so my fans can come and watch during the season,” Wondra said. “Overall, I enjoy the thrill of competition and the great people I race with.”
