Merlin W. Hammen, age 89, of Adell, WI, passed away Sunday afternoon (August 13, 2023) at Ascension
Columbia/St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee where he had been a patient for the past 4 days.
He was born on August 6, 1934, on the family farm in Beechwood, WI, son of the late William and Leona
(Matthies) Hammen. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1952 and served in the United States
Navy from 1956 to 1962.
On November 7 th , 1959 he married Diane F. Bintzler at St. Patrick’s Church in Adell, WI. The couple
resided in Adell following their marriage, being lifelong residents. They celebrated 53 years of marriage
and she preceded him in death on February 9. 2013.
Merlin worked at Kiekhaefer Manufacturing in Cedarburg and transferred to Mercury Marine in Fond du
Lac for 44 years, retiring in 1999. He also tended Bar at Greg’s Tap in Adell from 1968-2008, while being
co-owner in the early years. He was an avid Packer fan (attended the Ice Bowl), loved snowmobiling, and
was a big race fan, both dirt and asphalt. He made many trips to Knoxville & Eldora with the guys and
Iola trips were always a must. He cherished spending time at their cottage in the northwoods (Silver
Cliff) watching all the critters & socializing with many friends at the local watering holes.
He enjoyed his monthly ROMEO “Retired Old Men Eating Out” breakfasts with many friends, and let’s
not forget the traditional annual “Indy 500” parties they hosted. In his early years, he enjoyed playing
his guitar and singing, and was an accomplished Stumph Fiddle player.
Merlin was a former member of the Adell Fire Department for many years. He belonged to the
Sheboygan County 8 Ball League for many years and was a founding member of the Adell Yeti’s
Snowmobile Club.
Survivors include: Four children: John (Mandy) Hammen of Beaver Dam, Randy (Deborah) Hammen of
Town of Mitchell, Debbie Pierce of Plymouth, and Tom (Shelly) Hammen of Random Lake; 9
grandchildren: Derek (Kelly) Hammen of Milwaukee, Drew (Amy) Hammen of Chicago, IL,
Johnny and Preston Hammen both of Beaver Dam, Nicole (Ben) Thompson of Reedsville, Andrew
(Jennifer) Hammen of Kiel, Jeremy Pierce (Fiancée Alli) of Plymouth, Kaitlyn (Chris) Braby of Fredonia
and Jay Pierce of Plymouth; 10 precious great-grandchildren; Sisters-in-law: Delores Miller of Plymouth
and Lilly (Lee) Kappel of Adell; Brother-in-law, Leroy Schroeder of Rothschild; Along with many nieces,
nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Merlin was preceded in death by: His parents; His wife, Diane; Sister, Doris (George) Stolper; Brothers-
in-law: Lloyd “Heine” (Mame) Bintzler and Merlin Miller; and Sisters-in-law: Margaret “Peggy” Schroeder
and Lorraine (Norbert) Gonwa.
Following Merlin’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Services will be held on Thursday
(August 24, 2023) at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Visitation will take place from 4-7pm with a
service to follow at 7:00pm. Pastor Dale Miller will officiate.
Military rites will be conducted by the Plymouth VFW World Cheese Center Post # 5612 following the
services at the Suchon Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Merlin’s name.
