Rescuers acted even before needed equipment arrived, but their efforts weren’t enough to save a person from drowning on Thursday evening.
The 911 call came from the Breezy Hill Campground, just south of the City of Fond du Lac, where an individual was reported trapped beneath an inflatable floating dock in a swimming pond at the site. A large, multi-unit response was initiated, however two deputies who are also members of the Fond du Lac County Dive Team arrived in advance of their main unit – which had the diving equipment – removed their patrol gear and immediately entered the water to begin the search. At 6:26 p.m, the Sheriff’s Office reports that an unresponsive male was recovered in 10 feet of water. The victim was given resuscitation efforts on shore and then transported to St. Agnes Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:24 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Office noted that the victim was visiting with a local organization that works to support persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The victim was identified as Paul Becker, a 39 year-old resident of Fond du Lac, and an investigation into the accident is ongoing.
