A portion of the Village of Oostburg had to be evacuated on Friday morning after a natural gas line was struck. The incident began shortly before 10 a.m. when the gas main was struck in the area of 10th and Michigan Avenue in Oostburg. WE energies made the evacuation request for people living between 9th and 10th Streets, and from Michigan to Aspen Avenues because of the risk of an explosion. Those persons were directed to the Oostburg Village Hall to wait out repair operations, with assistance offered to those needing it by the Oostburg Fire Department and the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office.
The leak was secured within about two hours but the evacuation order wasn’t lifted immediately, as gas had been detected in the sewage lines. After those sewers were ventilated, people were then allowed to return to their homes.
