Robert A. Hoogstra, 88, of Oostburg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June
28, 2023, at his home.
Bob was born on October 10, 1934, to John and Helen (Clever) Hoogstra in New
Jersey. He was united in marriage to Anita Smith on June 11, 1955, in Midland
Park, NJ.
Bob served his country in the US Army from 1953-55. He was a member of
Oostburg CRC. In New Jersey, he served as an elder and youth leader at Irving Park
CRC. Bob was a loving husband and dedicated father and had a love for plants,
flowers, gardening, and his dogs he had over the years.
Bob is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anita; children, Bob (Kathy) Hoogstra of
Muskegon, MI, Elaine (Wendell) Kappers of Oostburg, Ken (Lori) Hoogstra of
Brown Deer; grandchildren, Jon (Wendy), Dave (Jenna) and Chris (Lizzie) Hoogstra,
Josh (Jessie), Taylor (Codie Keller) Kappers, Allison (Brady) Otte, Alex Kappers, Leah
(Joseph McGuire) Hoogstra, Kristen (Connor) Gustafson; great-grandchildren,
James Hoogstra, Evelyn, Luke, Joanna, and Sophie Hoogstra, Joshua Kappers,
Bradlie Mae, Ellis, and August Otte, and Lennon Gustafson. He is further survived
by his sister, Elaine Freitag; brother-in-law, Al (Jeannette) Smith; nieces, nephews,
other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William (Gertrude) Hoogstra, John (Jean)
Hoogstra; and brother-in-law, Wayne Frietag.
A memorial service to celebrate his life with military honors will be held at
Oostburg CRC on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at 11:00am. He will be laid to rest at
Oostburg Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may greet the family at Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on
Monday, July 17 from 4:00-7:00pm and again at Oostburg CRC on Tuesday, from
10:00am until the time of service.
Memorials are appreciated in Bob’s name to Oostburg Christian School Resource
Room, OCS Building Fund, and Oostburg CRC Building Fund.
Bob’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. H. Marshall Matthews
and his staff, the staff of Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice, and their
