(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 9, 2023 – With deep family roots in the local racing scene, second-year Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car driver Randy Post of Oostburg is hard pressed to recall a time in his life when summer weekends weren’t spent at a race track.
The Sheboygan Falls native grew up with racing at the forefront as his grandfather, father and godfather each spent a number of seasons behind the wheel of a racecar.
“Former Winged Modified driver and Plymouth Dirt Track and Midwest Sprint Car Association flagman Dave Deicher was my godfather,” Post said. “My dad raced at Plymouth a few times and he mainly raced at the old Chilton Fairgrounds track. My grandfather also raced at Plymouth in the 1950s. I don’t remember a time in my life I wasn’t around racing in some sort of aspect.”
Even during his six-year tour of active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Post didn’t stray too far from the racing world.
“While in the Air Force, I spent time in Anchorage, Alaska, Dover Delaware and Doha, Qatar,” Post said. “My first full-time gig in racing came in 2015 when I worked on Northeast Big Block Modifieds for Kevin Gardner from Laurel, Delaware.”
Post’s first taste of driving a racecar came two years ago in the seat of a full-fendered stock car.
“In 2021, I was a rookie in the Unified Street Stock division,” Post said. “I ran a full season at Gravity Park Speedway in Chilton and I also tried a few other tracks.”
After spending one season in the Street Stock division, Post went all in to make the big leap into a 360 Sprint Car at The Plymouth Dirt Track in 2022.
“Sprint Cars have always been my ultimate goal in racing,” Post said. “I love everything about them, except how much they cost.”
After enduring an admittedly challenging 360 Sprint Car rookie campaign in 2022, Post has been building up his comfort and confidence level in the seat of his No. 54 machine in 2023.
“Honestly, it has been a real struggle adjusting to and figuring out how to make a Sprint Car go fast,” Post said. “Over the past few weeks, I have been really starting to get comfortable as a driver. I’m slowly peck away each time we hit the track. We are consistently getting better, which is the main thing for us right now.”
Through the first four nights of the 2023 season, Post stands 18th in the PDTR 360 Sprint Car point standings after turning in a solid 24th to 16th run in the most recent 360 Sprint Car main event at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, June 3.
As far as goals for the 2023 season, Post is keeping things simple.
“I would really like to just have fun in 2023, while getting a handle on and an idea of how to progress each week,” Post said.
In reflecting on his relatively brief tenure at the controls of a racecar, Post recalls a fond memory from his rookie campaign in the Street Stock ranks.
“My career highlight so far, was beating Brian Gundrum in our last heat race together in a Street Stock,” he said.
Post says the time spent with fellow racing enthusiasts at the track and working on his own in his shop are equally important to him.
“I enjoy all the people involved in racing the most,” Post said. “I also enjoy all the hours in the garage by myself, relaxing and hanging out with my dog, Jack, just working on the car and cleaning dirty parts.”
In his second season of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car competition, Post is thoroughly enjoying being a regular weekly competitor at The Plymouth Dirt Track.
“The simple answer to why I like racing at Plymouth is because it is close to home, but there is so much more to it that makes Plymouth special,” Post said. “The steak station is out of this world amazing. The history at the track is remarkable and inspiring as well. My family has raced there for many years. The people are also always awesome. I love going and joking around with the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing staff when I sign in. Also, when I have asked for help from fellow competitors, I have never been told ‘no’ or found that they wouldn’t help. There are so many amazing people that surround Plymouth Dirt Track Racing.”
