The need for the cleanup of potentially hazardous materials along Sheboygan’s North 15th Street Corridor has drawn the favor of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has granted a half-million dollars towards the remedy.
U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin announced the award of $9.5 million in order to expedite Wisconsin brownfield sites – former industrial sites where legacy pollution has hindered future use and poses environmental risks. Sheboygan County was granted $500,000 through the Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup (MARC) Grant funding, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
According to the EPA’s Brownfields 2023 Assessment Fact Sheet, the half million dollars awarded to Sheboygan County will target the 15th Street Corridor in the City of Sheboygan. Priority sites include the Jakum Hall Property and an assemblage of nine parcels on North 15th Street, an assemblage of three parcels at 13th and Erie Avenue, and an assemblage of three parcels at 13th and Michigan.
