An unwelcome visitor from Canada will make its presence known today in the Sheboygan area and much of the US as winds bring wildfire smoke our way, prompting widespread health advisories. An Air Quality Advisory covers much of the nation, and is in effect for all but northeastern Wisconsin as smoke that’s stayed at high altitude for the past few days is pulled to the surface in the wake of a cold front.
In northeastern Wisconsin that could be a nuisance with some reduced visibility and mild irritation. However, in areas like ours under the advisory that smoke could be trouble for people with respiratory issues like asthma. Concentrations could increase sharply at times, and then only gradually diminish into the evening. While it’s present, you may smell the smoke from the fires some 1500 miles away, and those with heart or lung disease or asthma might need to stay indoors and keep medications and help nearby. Others should limit time outdoors, and if you start coughing or have shortness of breath, get to healthier air as soon as possible.
The advisory lasts until midnight, and the weekend looks much better for now.
