Our dear Janet K. Hughes, 76, of Plymouth WI, and formerly of Nelsonville WI, claimed her eternal wings on May 6,
2023.
She was born at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point on November 20, 1946, daughter of the late Anton and
Esther (Slettene) Anderson.
Janet grew up on her parent’s family farm near Nelsonville, WI, and was a graduate of Amherst High School, Class
of 1964. She then attended and graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a degree in Secondary Education. She also met
the love of her life, Mike, during those college years. After marrying Mike in September 1970, she began her career
as a Kindergarten Teacher at Waldo and Sheboygan Falls Grade Schools, where she taught for 32 years. During this
time, Janet also became a devoted mother to her two daughters, Heather and Natalie, and lived in West Bend,
Cascade, and Plymouth. Throughout her life, she was deeply dedicated to providing a loving and nurturing
environment at home and in the classroom.
Janet was an incredibly sweet, caring, and beautiful soul. She loved the sound of ocean waves, palm trees, reading,
lifetime movies, singing “school’s out for summer”, relaxing on the patio, and making many chocolate birthday
cakes for the grandchildren. She also played a mean game of cribbage and canasta! Janet and Mike loved taking
convertible and motorcycle rides, snow birding south in winter, road tripping without maps, and watching Brewers
and grandkids’ games.
She created many unforgettable memories for her daughters including summer trips to Wynveen’s pool, beach
days at Long Lake, piano playtime, bedtime snuggles and prayers, painstaking geometry tutoring, making them the
best Halloween costumes, and baking a vast assortment of Christmas cookies!
She will be dearly missed by her seven grandchildren – all boys! She was their biggest fan…baking cookies, drawing
and painting, attending many sporting events, serving goulash, and of course the annual ping pong championship
medals at Christmas time.
Janet and her husband were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church (Cascade), St. John the Baptist (Plymouth) and
Shepherd of the Hills (Eden) through the years.
Janet is survived by her loving husband, Michael Hughes and their two daughters, Heather (Steve) Steinhardt of
Cascade, WI, and Natalie Hughes (Katie) Gossens of Plymouth, WI. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Sharon
Anderson, her brother-in-law Lowell Wynveen, her sister-in-law Kathy Hughes; her brother-in-law Tim Hughes; her
brother-in-law Dennis Hughes (Dianne); many loving grandchildren: Jake Steinhardt, Joe Steinhardt, Jack
Steinhardt, Sam Gossens, James Steinhardt, John Steinhardt and Ben Gossens; and many dear nieces and nephews;
and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Anton & Esther Anderson; her sisters: Joan (Anderson) Zarnke and
Betty Anderson; her brother: Richard Anderson; her brother-in-law Robert Hughes; and her sister-in-law Patty
Wynveen.
