Careless use of smoking materials has been blamed for a Tuesday morning fire in a south side Sheboygan apartment building. The Sheboygan County Emergency Communications Center got the call around 6:20 a.m. with reports of the sound of fire alarms and smoke filling the building in the 2300 block of Hillshire Drive south of Union Avenue. It took only four minutes for the first of eight Sheboygan Firefighter units to arrive and begin battling the fire which authorities say started on a second-story porch and then spread to the interior of the building. The door to the apartment involved had to be forced open so crews could enter with a hose line and extinguish the fire which, by then, had spread into the walls. Additional personnel search for any remaining occupants and evacuated them safely.
There were no injuries, no one was displaced, and damage was estimated at $15,000. Assistant SFD Chief Michael Lubbert reminded the public of the importance of a working fire alarm system that provided early notification, and added that all smoking materials should be completely extinguished before disposal in an appropriate container.
