LONDON (Reuters) – VfL Wolfsburg beat Arsenal 3-2 in extra-time with a 119th-minute winner from Pauline Bremer in the second leg of their women’s Champions League semi-final at Emirates Stadium on Monday to win 5-4 on aggregate and set up a summit clash with Barcelona.
Twice champions Wolfsburg will meet the 2021 winners in the final in Eindhoven on June 3 after the Spanish champions eliminated Chelsea to reach the showpiece match for a third straight year.
With 60,063 fans in attendance, Arsenal opened the scoring through Stina Blackstenius from a swift counter-attack in the 11th minute but Wolfsburg levelled when former Arsenal midfielder Jill Roord scored from the edge of the box.
Wolfsburg skipper Alexandra Popp, who returned from injury, made it 2-1 with a near-post header from a corner in the second half but Jen Beattie levelled the tie with a header of her own in the 75th minute to take the game to extra time.
The German side then silenced the home crowd in the 119th minute when their high-pressing yielded an error as Jule Brand pinched the ball from a tired Arsenal defence and laid it on a plate for Bremer to tap in from close range.
Wolfsburg will be playing in their sixth European final after losing the last three in 2016, 2018 and 2020.
