MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — A bill prohibiting transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports passed the US House last week.
Wisconsin Democrat Mark Pocan opposed it.
“The Republican governor of Utah vetoed similar legislation highlighting the daily challenges trans kids already go through, from bullying to suicide,” said Pocan. “I know not everyone may understand this or may not know someone who’s transgender. But just because you don’t understand something isn’t a good enough reason to outright ban kids from school sports.”
Republican Tom Tiffany supported the measure.
“Biological men have no business competing in women’s sports. It’s anti-women and it’s anti-science to think otherwise,” said Tiffany. “This will ensure that school athletics comply with the Title Nine recognition of a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
The bill is not expected to advance in the U.S. Senate where Democrats hold a narrow majority.
