The person police believe is responsible for setting suspicious wildfires for many years in southeastern Fond du Lac County has been arrested. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Chris Randall reported on Tuesday that fires were repeatedly erupting during the spring season over the course of several decades. After a lengthy joint investigation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, an arson suspect was identified through the use of fire forensic science, covert surveillance systems and multiple field interviews.
DNR and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s personnel conducted a joint interview with a 40-year-old Eden man who admitted to setting several fires since 2020, and also took responsibility for wildfires in that area dating back nearly 20 years. A total of 60 burnt acres were attributed to the suspect.
Charges of Arson and Intentionally Setting Fire to Land have been sent to District Attorneys in both Fond du Lac and Washington Counties, and the suspect’s identity and other information are being withheld for now.
