After opening just five months ago, Sheboygan’s Uptown Social is expanding its reach after having received a grant to administer vaccines to older and disabled adults in the area. The $41,445 grant comes from the National Council on Aging’s COVID-19 and Influenza Vaccine Uptake Initiative, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Uptown Social will partner with Sheboygan County Public Health and Lakeshore Community Health Care in order to make it as easy as possible for older adults and people with disabilities to get their updated vaccinations. Vaccine clinics will begin this fall at the North 8th Street location, while Sheboygan County Public Health will take care of getting shots to those who are home-bound.
The program aims to address the fact that today, nearly 9 out of 10 deaths from COVID-19, and between 70% and 85% of seasonal flu deaths occur among those 65 and older.
Sheboygan Senior Services Director Emily Rendall-Araujo called the program a proactive measure to keep the County’s older population active and healthy, and said that she was “thrilled” that Uptown Social was chosen as a recipient of the Vaccine Uptake Initiative grant.
