The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin is urging electric and natural gas utility customers with outstanding bills to take steps to avoid losing their service. The annual moratorium on utility disconnections expires on Saturday, and if payment arrangements aren’t made those customers could lose heat and power.
If you can’t afford payments, financial assistance is available from the Department of Administration’s Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program for low-income households. You could also take advantage of a Deferred Payment Agreement, which utilities are required to offer to anyone who can’t pay their bill in full.
Customers should first contact their utility directly to avoid disconnections, and then follow through with payment or assistance plans. Major utilities supplying Sheboygan County include:
• Alliant Energy 1-800-255-4268
• We Energies 1-800-842-4565
• Wisconsin Public Service Corporation 1-800-450-7260
The Department of Administration’s Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) provides assistance with emergency energy needs, emergency furnace repairs, conservation service and weatherization for low-income households. To apply online, customers can go to energybenefit.wi.gov or to apply by phone, customers can call the Statewide Customer Care Center at 1-800-506-5596.
If customers cannot reach a payment agreement with their utility, they may contact the PSC by calling 1-800-225-7729, or by filing a complaint on the PSC website.
