Just to confirm – the Vernal Equinox, the official astronomical beginning of Spring, arrived on Monday afternoon. That’s in addition to the meteorological, or weather-related, beginning of Spring on March first.
Now that we have those details out of the way, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Sheboygan and surrounding Counties from 4 a.m until 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 25. It could be worse…Milwaukee, Waukesha and other counties to the south and southwest have a Winter Storm Warning, with 6 to 10 inches of wet, heavy, wind-blown snow – the kind that sticks to tree branches and power lines – introducing the possibility of damage and power outages.
For Sheboygan and surrounding counties the picture is at least gentler, if not equally as insulting, to those hoping for something more seasonal. Sheboygan County in particular is expected to receive the heaviest snowfall, around 6 inches, in the southeast corner, with the lighter 4 inch totals in the northwest corner. Regardless of eventual totals, the heaviest snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely to begin around 7 a.m. Saturday and begin to abate by around 1 p.m. making travel just as difficult as anywhere else. When snow falls that heavily visibilities will be reduced, as will traction as snowfall rates overcome the ability of warmer road surfaces to counteract the cold.
If there’s any consolation for a late March snow event, it may be that by Sunday night much of Saturday’s snow may have succumbed to the strong sunshine that’s forecast to dominate the end of the weekend.
