A pandemic-related boost of $95 per month from a federal food program ended this month, putting a strain on families that depend on the Wisconsin FoodShare program to buy the food they need. Those families are now being offered a helping hand from Meijer stores, which is expanding its Flashfood program.
Flashfood is an app through which customers shop for food like meat, produce, seafood, deli and bakery products nearing their sell-by date at up to 50 percent off, then pick them up from a designated refrigerator at Meijer. On Tuesday, Meijer announced that their stores will now accept Wisconsin EBT cards when people eligible for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program use the Flashfood app. Meijer is the first retailer nationwide to open the app to SNAP payments.
The program is a win-win for all sides. Meijer says Flashfood has already kept nearly 5.6 million pounds of good food from going to landfills and instead into hungry mouths. Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes said that by opening Flashfood to EBT cards, Meijer will now be able to provide extra value to the customers who need it most.
