Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson gave the annual “State of the City” address at Monday night’s Common Council meeting.
In his address, Sorenson outlined highlights and accomplishments of the past year, noting that despite strong challenges, the City has continued to “move forward due to strong leadership from our department heads and determination of our city staff.”, and the mayor asked for patience as the City “moves forward to take the appropriate steps to fulfill its mission” which, Sorenson said, consists of “providing residents, the business community and visitors with fiscally-responsible municipal services in an effective and responsible manner to meet the needs of our diverse community.”
The Mayor said the City has met many challenges, such as recovery from the June 15th wind storm that downed hundreds of trees, damaging homes, vehicles and sidewalks in the process, and operated most of the year without a Human Resources director. But he credited strong leadership from department heads and staff for seeing the city through those and other challenges.
In closing, the mayor said more affordable housing is an ongoing problem, as is attracting and maintaining new businesses, maintaining roads, and being more strategic in spurring economic development. And as he closed, the mayor said that “I know that we can do better and continue to make Sheboygan a great place where everyone can thrive. And because of that, I know that the state of our city is strong, and is growing stronger every day.”
