A home warranty scam is seeking to defraud local homeowners of money and personal information.
Sheboygan County Register of Deeds Ellen Schleicher said on Friday that a number of Wisconsin residents have received letters via postal mail from a source called “Home Warranty Direct” titled “County Deed Records”. Each mailer urges homeowners to purchase a home warranty, claiming that the current warranty “may be expiring or may have already expired” whether or not a real warranty had ever been purchased. According to Register Schleicher the letter warns that failure to respond could result in potential loss of coverage. If you receive a letter from Home Warranty Direct, she said that it should be ignored and discarded.
Schleicher said that solicitations that use threatening language or unnecessary urgency are almost always a scam, and that anyone considering buying a legitimate home warranty should first do their research by confirming that the company and agent are licensed to operate in Wisconsin and also check reputations with the Better Business Bureau.
