Repair due to the failure of pavement beneath the intersection of 14th and Erie Avenue in Sheboygan will cost up to $215,000 to fix according to an agenda item to be considered at Monday night’s Common Council Meeting.
Detail of item 20, authored by Alders Felde and Filicky-Peneski, requests authorization for “the emergency repair and reconstruction of storm sewer and road for the intersection of N. 14th Street and Erie Avenue, resulting from a broken storm sewer pipe that caused major erosion and authorizing an adjustment to the 2023 budget to fund the repair.”
Supporting documents relate that city staff visually observed pavement failing at that intersection on January 5th. During the immediate, partial closure that followed, crews discovered a break in a 36-inch storm sewer pipe beneath the intersection, and as a result soil was drawn into the pipe, leaving behind a large and growing void beneath the pavement.
As Public Works Director David Biebel declared it an emergency “endangering public health and welfare and that failure to immediately repair the condition could lead to additional damage and loss…”, the situation qualified to forego a bidding process. And so it requests approval of a contract “not to exceed $215,000” be approved with Buteyn-Peterson Construction Company for the repair and reconstruction of storm sewer and intersection pavement.
Funds will be transferred from the General Fund to Stormwater Funds in order to pay for the project.
No timeline accompanied the announcement from City Hall.
(Note – the DPW had previously announced a Wednesday, 1/18/23 completion target date)
