Families are being invited to a visit with St. Nicholas at the hospital which bears his name. “A visit with St. Nicholas” is an event embracing the traditional spirit of Christmas at Sheboygan’s St. Nicholas Hospital from 5 until 7 p.m. on Monday, December 5th, also known as “St. Nick Eve”. While such European traditions as filling a shoe with hay and a carrot for the Saint’s horse or receiving a present beneath the pillow won’t be observed, families will be able to meet and take photos with St. Nicholas followed by the reading of the Christmas story and carols from choirs.
St. Nicholas is generally accepted to be the first Santa Claus, but his feast is almost three weeks before Christmas and these days the two figures have their own identities. But St. Nicholas’ well-known charitable role as a bringer of gifts will be celebrated with hot cocoa, cookies, and a goodie bag to the first 200 children who attend, and guests are also encouraged to bring a new pair of shoes for donation to a local charity. Those planning to attend are being reminded to dress warmly for the event held outside the Chapel entrance on Taylor Drive.
