Coast Guard Station Sheboygan appears poised to get a rebuild, assuming critical legislation is passed in Washington.
Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office said that Coast Guard Stations in Sturgeon Bay, Kenosha and Sheboygan are each proposed to receive $40 million from the Bipartisan Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2022 to rebuild after high Lake Michigan waters in 2019 compromised facilities. During that year water often breached the banks of the Sheboygan River, flooding the local coast guard station and other buildings along the river. In Green Bay that year, the Coast Guard had to evacuate their station completely, relocate their vessels, and now bases operations out of hotels.
Other parts of the bill include $350 million for the Great Lakes Icebreaker program, acquisition of snowmobiles, and funds a study on the need for Aviation Assets such as rescue helicopters.
In announcing the legislation, Baldwin said the spending will “help mitigate devastating climate-related events, invest in climate resilient Coast Guard infrastructure at places like Sturgeon Bay and will increase support for childcare, housing, and education needed to do right by our service members and veterans.
