Doris Laverne Oonk, 94, of Oostburg, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Pine Haven Christian Communities – Giddings Avenue Campus.
Doris was born to Raymond and Alice (TeBeest) TenDolle on January 16, 1928, in the Town of Lima. She attended Horace Mann Grade School and graduated from Oostburg High School in 1945.
On April 9, 1947, Doris was united in marriage to Gilbert Oonk at Gibbsville Reformed Church. He preceded her in death on February 8, 2008.
Doris was a lifetime member of Gibbsville Church, where she served as a Sunday school and Bible Class teacher and was a part of Bethany Circle.
She completed courses at Lakeshore Technical College in her late 40s to be a Nurses Aid and enjoyed working for Memorial Hospital until she retired.
Doris loved to travel and had many stories and photographs of the places visited throughout her life. She and Gib spent their retirement taking walks, riding their bikes, and going fishing. Doris was also an avid reader. She most enjoyed time spent with her family and friends.
Doris is survived by her son, Robert (Betty) Oonk; daughter, Cindy (Trent) Schwanda; son-in-law, John Eiring; grandchildren, Rob (Melissa) German, Tim German, Matthew (Myriah) German, Scott Oonk, Jeffrey (Amy) Oonk, Jamie (Aaron) Kueck, Melissa (Jason) Kimme, Jason (Amanda) Eiring; great-grandchildren, Robbie, Riley, Katie, Mandi, Jacob, Nate, and Josh German, Ryan, Joshua, and Estelle Oonk, Erika Pfeifer, Brooklyn Kimme, Hayden and Isaac Lehman, Evelyn and Mabel Eiring, Addilyn, Bennett, and Owen Kueck; and great-great-grandchild, Jayce German. She is further survived by her sisters, Mary Dirkse and Bonnie (Dan) Belshan; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; daughters, Deborah Eiring and Sharon (Robert) German; parents; sister, Ruth (Leon) Obbink; and brother-in-law, Carl Dirkse.
A memorial service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held at Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 1:00pm.
Relatives and friends may greet the family from 11:00 until the time of service.
Memorials are appreciated in Doris’ name to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
