Two Wisconsin men were sentenced in federal court last week in connection with sex crimes in Manitowoc County.
In one case, a worker with the State Department of Administration, 43-year-old Marc Bennett, formerly of Jefferson, Wisconsin, told arresting officers that he was attempting to save a victim of human trafficking and displayed his worker badge. In fact, Bennett had been communicating with a 12-year-old girl, requesting graphic images of her and expressing his desire to have sex with her. He was arrested when he traveled to Manitowoc on February 1st of this year to meet her, and was sentenced this past Friday to ten years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release.
In a separate case, 51-year-old Smedley Butler of Maribel was sentenced last Wednesday to 10 years in federal prison for his crimes. The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office was tipped off last November to Butler having possessed and distributed numerous child pornography images and videos on the internet. Butler, already a registered sex offender from a previous conviction, will have to spend an additional 15 years on supervised release after serving his sentence.
