- Sheboygan South, Head Coach: Jason Harder; 2021 season record: 2-7 (2-5)
The Redwings look to bounce back from a less than ideal 2021 season, a mountain more difficult to climb with 11 seniors gone from last year’s team, including three starting offensive linesmen, anchored by Aden Katz, an All-Conference (Fox River Classic Conference South Division) 2021 1st Team Offensive Line and an Honorable Mention Defensive Line selection and currently playing for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. There are plenty of players this year’s squad that returning for their senior seasons though, like the team’s top running back Treston Dekker who ran for 868 yards and six touchdowns in 2021. Assistant coach Mason White said that “we actually have the players responsible for 80% of our rushing yards and about 65% of the receiving yards produced returning from last year’s team.” White also added that “defensively, 4 of the top 5 tacklers on our team are returning, and we played between 10 and 15 sophomores every game in 2021, so we have a lot of young guys full of valuable experience.” The Redwings’ starting quarterback Aiden Nienhuis is a part of this group, entering his junior season in 2022, who finished the 2021 season with third most passing yards, and second most passing touchdowns in the Fox River Classic Conference South Division.
The team’s non-conference schedule will be a gauntlet this season with games against Nicolet, who is coming off their first playoff win and best season in 20 years, and Plymouth who had a 10-1 in 2021 including a 35-0 shutout over the Redwings. In-conference foes like Menasha, Notre Dame, and Manitowoc all had incredibly strong 2021’s, including playoff appearances, most notably Menasha who finished in the semifinals of Division 3. The Redwings will also be looking for a landmark win against chief rival Sheboygan North, whom have won the last three games against Sheboygan South. Coach White concluded that the Redwings “will have to play very well to have a chance to make the playoffs this year, with our schedule and tough in-conference competition.”
