“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” You’ll probably be hearing about that frequently from now through the Labor Day weekend. The Wisconsin State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies are conducting the annual campaign to clamp down on impaired driving, and improve safety on public roads.
The Wisconsin DOT says that someone is injured or killed in an impaired driving crash every two hours in Wisconsin, and that impairment isn’t always due to alcohol. While 166 deaths were due to drunk driving in 2021, another 74 deaths were because because the driver had drugs in their system.
Wisconsin has trained 14 officers as Drug Recognition Experts to help stem impaired driving, one of the highest numbers of DRE’s in the nation. And along with more than 6,300 Wisconsin officers trained in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, this year’s Drive Sober campaign is fully staffed and ready to take impaired drivers off the road. Their advice is simple: If you’re impaired by drugs or alcohol, don’t drive, and have someone else get behind the wheel.
