The Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan will be the hub of sports competition this week as the 2022 AAA Wisconsin Legion State Tournament takes place Today through Saturday.
Ryan Salm is one of the organizers of the tournament, and he said the event is a “big deal” for the players, telling us that “This is what Legion ballplayers look forward to. This is: ‘I’m at the State Tournament and I have a chance to go onto the National regionals’.”
And Salm said it’s also a big deal for the City of Sheboygan. He said that from an economic standpoint the tournament is bringing in 144 baseball players plus families, and he’s looking to pack the stands every day. Those stands can hold up to 1200 people and around 800 are expected to watch each game.
The tournament was supposed to be in Sheboygan in 2020 until COVID, but now it’s here and it’s time for Sheboygan’s Wildwood Baseball park to shine. Salm said that Wildwood is a top-notch facility in Wisconsin, saying “You don’t go to another Legion park in the State that’s similar, or even comes close to what Wildwood is.
Nine Legion teams composed of players ages 16-19 from around Wisconsin will be competing during the tournament, which serves as a major fundraiser for the American Legion Post 83 baseball team. The Sheboygan A’s also employ the tournament as part of its mission to support and develop youth through baseball. The action gets underway this morning, but the big opening ceremony will be tonight.
