Keep an eye on your picnic baskets, and garbage cans, for that matter. Two black bear sightings were recorded in video in far southwest Sheboygan County late last week. One was captured on cell phone video in a farm field in Beechwood, while the second sighting was reported in Parnell.
The Wisconsin DNR says that populations have been slowly expanding, with recent sightings as far south as Washington and Waukesha Counties. Encounters are more likely in early summer when young bears strike out on their own for the first time.
The DNR says if a bear is near your home or cabin, DO NOT RUN, but make noise from a safe distance to scare it away, and if you’re in the open slowly back away making sure the bear has a way to escape.
And, they say the best way to avoid attracting a bear is to keep food away, including the removal of garbage and to completely remove bird feeders even during daylight hours.
