With hot summer weather now expected to be frequent, the Wisconsin DOT is advising drivers to be cautious of buckling pavement.
Hot weather causes pavement to expand…and slabs to push against each other. If the pressure is great enough, pavement can buckle creating unexpected bumps and dips. And since it’s impossible to predict where it will happen, it’s important to pay attention to when it’s likely – during hot, sunny weather.
While today could be one of those days, the weekend should provide some relief. But by Monday temperatures are likely to be back near 90 and when that happens, the DOT says drivers should slow down, buckle up, and keep full attention on the roadway. Call 911 if you see or encounter buckling, and before you leave check the 511wi.gov website which posts any such alerts online.
