With many hoping for their first beach holiday this year, the National Weather Service and U.S. Coast Guard are both warning people to exercise caution.
The National Weather Service has issued multiple beach hazard statements and small craft advisories around Lake Michigan through the rest of the holiday – until 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
Southeast winds gusting from 25 to 30 MPH will generate waves of 3-5 feet along the beaches, and the Coast Guard advises that boaters could encounter waves up to 8 feet offshore. Rip currents are likely to pose the most dangerous conditions, capable of pulling swimmers quickly away from shore in waters as cold as the mid 40s. Such conditions can cause exhaustion or unconsciousness in 30 to 60 minutes. In Sheboygan County, the beach most at-risk is General King Park in the City of Sheboygan.
Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls. Strong structural and longshore currents are expected along with the possible rip currents.
