Sheboygan area middle school students are wanted by the Police, but not in the way you might guess. Students currently in grades 6-8 in any Sheboygan Area District public or private school can enroll in the Sheboygan Junior Police Academy.
The free program was established 14 years ago by School Resource Officer Eric Edson. It’s designed to take the mystery out of law enforcement in an “enforcement-free” setting where officers and students can see each other as regular people, and not as adversaries. Students aren’t necessarily expected to become officers themselves, but the SPD says they will gain more confidence and a sense of achievement that will last years to come, helping prepare them to become “tomorrow’s leaders.”
There’s only a few days to sign up for the 20-hour sessions that take place mornings for 5 days, the first set beginning June 27th. Another will be held starting later in July. There’s no charge, but registration closes Thursday.
