After coordinated efforts between the Sheboygan Police Department and authorities in the State of Arizona, a party responsible for online threats against a Sheboygan middle school student was identified and apprehended.
The incident came to light a week ago today when, on May 12th, the Sheboygan Police Department coordinated with the Sheboygan Area School District regarding online threats made to an SASD middle school student through a social media account. Investigators quickly determined that the social media account was an imposter account, and that the threats were not credible.
The initial investigation was able to narrow down the origins of the threat to Arizona, and upon working with authorities in that state, Sheboygan Police Detectives were able to direct Arizona authorities to execute a search warrant on the residence of a 14-year-old juvenile, and seized several electronic devices. The juvenile also admitted their involvement in creating the imposter account. The investigation is ongoing, and it’s anticipated that the suspect will be referred to juvenile authorities in Arizona.
The Sheboygan Police Department thanked the community for submitting tips related to the investigation, and suggested that parents use this as a teachable moment; to discuss the importance of responsible online behavior with their children and to avoid forwarding or commenting on unverified, provocative social media reports.
