A threat directed toward a Sheboygan area middle school student was determined to be most likely from an out-of-state fake social media account created to appear as of local origin.
The SPD says they became aware of the threat at about 10 p.m. Sunday and immediately began an investigation, while also contacting officials from the Sheboygan Area School District. Contact was also made with several students mentioned by name in the messages, and it was determined that they were not responsible for the threat.
Police investigators believe that the person responsible for the threatening message did so by creating a fake account using personal information of somebody from the local area who is not responsible for the content, and likely originated in another state. It was determined that there is no threat and the investigation into the source continues.
The SPD is asking that people pay particular attention to social media, especially when used by youth, and to report suspicious or threatening messages. It is also asked that social media content, when containing negative or threatening content, not be shared so as to avoid providing unnecessary attention to the individuals seeking that attention.
