The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or “Bird Flu” has now arrived in Sheboygan County. The identification of the disease here, and in another two counties, was announced by the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection on Thursday. The other two counties identified were Columbia and Polk, and it was previously discovered in Jefferson, Rock, Racine and Barron Counties.
In Sheboygan County the virus was identified in a mixed species of backyard birds, and depopulation of the flocks are now underway.
State Veterinarian Dr. Darlene Konkle said that everyone working around poultry is urged to increase their biosecurity measures and continue reporting signs of illness to help prevent the spread of the virus.
