Donald H. Van Engen, 90, of Sheboygan, was called home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 14, 2022 at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan. He was a Communications and Electronics Technician for the City of Sheboygan Police Department and retired in 1994. Donald was born to the late Henry and Violet (Guetschow) Van Engen on July 27, 1931. He attended Immanuel Lutheran grade school, Central High School and what is now known as Milwaukee Area Technical College. He served his country during the Korean conflict entering active service in October 1952 and landed at Inchon, Korea in March 1953. He served with “D” Company, 17th Reg. 7th Infantry Division as machine gunner. In early July 1953 he was wounded in action at battle for Pork Chop in Yonchon, Korea. He was recovering from wounds in Tokyo Army Hospital when armistice was signed on his birthday, July 27, 1953. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantry Badge and Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in 1954. Donald was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Combat Infantry Association and the National Rifle Association. He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and served on many boards and committees. Donald was united in marriage to Carol Westpfahl on June 27th, 1959 and together had one son, Michael Henry. Donald loved hunting, fishing, and photography.
Donald is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Michael (Jennifer) and was blessed with two grandchildren, Abigail Tammy and Bradley Jacob Van Engen.
Donald is preceded in death by his father, mother, step-mother Emma (Kern), brother Thomas Jean and numerous uncles and aunts.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1121 Georgia Avenue, Sheboygan, with Rev. Patrick Niles officiating. There will not be a public visitation. Entombment will take place at Garden Terrace Mausoleum at Lutheran Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.reinboldfh.com.
